An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a number series assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. IP address is used to identify networks and locate addresses.
Initially The format of an IP address was a 32-bit numeric address(known as IPv4) written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255.This format is still in use.But due to rapid proliferation of computer networks it was felt that 32 bit system will not enough to sustain new additions in future . So a new 128bit system (know as IPv6) has been introduced in 1995 .
