SIMRAN

SIMRAN,developed by IIT-Kanpur,is a satellite imaging software for rail navigation system which is expected to bring the number of train accidents down.The software has been developed, as part of the Railway Safety Technology Mission, by an IIT-led consortium of academic institutions, companies, and R&D outfits.

.It is a train-tracking system which involves a simple implementation of the geo-positioning system, GSM and radio frequency-based instrumentation. It helps monitoring every train in a certain geographical boundary for its location, speed, and the direction of movement. Thus, it can be of great help to the railways department in averting collisions

The system provides information on the arrival of a train at the station, its departure, the time taken to move from one station to another, the position of the train between two stations being updated every minute, etc.

Additionally this technology is also beneficial for a number of other transport modes where tracking is involved.

    this may not be useful for trains going opposite to each other . Beneficial only for train moving in a single direction ?

    .it give info regarding actual position of train irrespective of direction of trains...so once we know exact location collision can be averted.....in some train u can see real time location of train and its distance from station...thts one of the use of SIMRAN

Scheme for creation of National Optical Fiber Network for Broadband connectivity of Panchayats

The Union Cabinet recently approved a scheme for creation of a National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN) for providing Broadband connectivity to Panchayats. The objective of the scheme is to extend the existing optical fiber network which is available up to district / block HQ’s level to the Gram Panchayat level initially by utilizing the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF). The cost of this initial phase of the NOFN scheme is likely to be about Rs.20,000 crore. A similar amount of investment is likely to be made by the private sector complementing the NOFN infrastructure while providing services to individual users. In economic terms, the benefits from the scheme are expected through additional employment, e-education, e-health, e-agriculture etc. and reduction in migration of rural population to urban areas.
