The National Innovation Council was established under the Chairmanship of Mr. Sam Pitroda in the wake of the Government of India declaring 2010-2020 as the Decade of Innovation to discuss, analyse and help implement strategies for inclusive innovation in India and prepare a Road map for Innovation 2010-2020.
This declaration recognizes the potential of innovation to bridge unmet needs and access gaps in vital sectors such as agriculture, education, energy, health, skills, urban and rural development, and others; and to drive growth, competitiveness, employment, and opportunity for the country. The Council has been tasked with formulating and implementing an Indian model of inclusive innovation that can deliver these, and with preparing a roadmap for innovation in the country. India’s challenges in these areas are unique, and require innovative approaches and solutions.
NIC will act as a platform to facilitate the engagement and collaboration with domain experts, stakeholders and key participants to create an innovation movement in India. The aim is to herald a mindset change and create a push at the grassroots level so that more and more people in education, business, government, NGOs, urban and rural development engaged in innovative activities are co-opted and are part of shaping the national level innovation strategy.
The National Innovation Council’s (NInC) First Report to the People 2011 is being released by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on 15th November 2011
